THEME OF THE WEEK: Creativity

This one is for the yoga teachers out there!
There’s a lot of pressure in our society to be “creative.” And there’s a lot of pressure in the yoga teaching field to be creative. So let me remind you, yoga and pilates was never meant to be creative or to entertain. We might have some circus tricks (I can’t be the only one who’s done tittibasana once or twice at a bar) up our sleeves but really it’s not a circus.
So don’t be creative for the sake of being creative or to appear interesting. This is ego driven teaching. Don’t compare your creativity to others as it may look entirely different. Creativity once unlocked is always more simple than complex. If something seems overcomplicated than it probably isn’t the best thing to teach or stand by. Don’t be pulled by the idea that creativity means sequencing. While it definitely can be, it’s not always the case.
So how do you unlock your creativity? Well, you must practice, you must observe, you must plan, you must refine. Teach with love and purpose, and never stop being a student.
“You can’t use creativity up, the more you use, the more you have.” – Maya Angelou
